It was one foot after another, one step after the next. She had to keep moving. It’d been less than a day; she could still see the city, damn it! What kind of an adventurer took walked down a hill and then called it quits, threw in their shield, and shuffled back home a couple hours after leaving? A failure, that’s what. One that couldn’t handle the outside world and so returned back to the easy comforts of home. She was tougher than that.
She was fine. It wasn’t that hot, she wasn’t that tired. She could keep going. This wasn’t about finding whatever deep secrets the wasteland held anymore, or even a little more for her efforts than a couple of weird rocks. No, this was her against the wasteland.
And she would not be defeated by a damn pile of sand.
---
A short time later, a returning expedition found a lone fallen surveyor, drawn by sparkles half-buried beneath the sand they had thought to be diamonds. It took a short time to revive her and a good while longer to convince her to return to the city with them.
In the end, this was a defeat, but not one she was going to be taking lightly.
(A few hours later, an intern would find themselves a few minutes short of closing and a surveyor dragging herself to the desk and slapping several diamonds, fossils, and a half-legible location down on its surface as Etude donates all 17 loot to the Surveying Association!)
