Name: Aphaerla Suir
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student, going the generalized education route and slacking off because she's going to be THE BEST surveyor anyway
Face Claim: Kono Subarashii Sekai Ni Shukufuku Wo! - Aqua
Appearance: Standing at 5'2", Aphaerla has an extremely muscular build. It's clear that she works out often and she's obviously very strong. Her torso is long and her legs are short, making her look a little chubbier than she is despite having next to no fat on her. Her face is oddly proportioned, with soft cheeks, a round chin, small nose, and eyes large enough that she looks a little bug eyed compared to the softness of the rest of her features. Both her hair and eyes are blue, and her hair is long enough to reach her knees. She takes very good care of it, so it tends to be shiny and she makes a point of standing in such a way to make it blow around dramatically (it normally makes her look silly).
Her clothing choices can only be described as 'trying too hard.' She favors leather and other clothing with a little bit of hardness to help protect her when fighting monsters in Twilight Jungle, but she still wears them when she's perfectly safe too because she thinks they look cool. Despite that, she typically keeps her arms bare, and sometimes even her legs from the mid thigh down.
Aphaerla has a very obvious mutation: she glows. Streams of light wrap around parts of her body. Starting from her head, it wraps around her head and forehead much like a circlet. Then it goes down the back of her head, under her hair, down her neck and into her back. From there, it branches out into 4 paths: 1 on either side of her spine, and 1 going down her shoulder blades onto the tops of her arms. It goes down each of her arms, going onto the tops of her hands, between her ring and middle finger, and then onto her palms where it makes a coiling pattern on her palms and ends. The rest goes down her back, then goes around her midsection, surrounding her belly button before going back down her back and onto her legs. It does down the front of her legs, onto her shins, before ending in a point at the top of her feet. The entire path glows, though which color it glows varies.
Talents:
Spear Fighting: She may not be the smartest, but if you need something stabbed she can stab it real good. Aphaerla spends lots of time beating up the monsters in the jungle, and while she often comes home with severe injuries she's getting better!
Adapting: If something weird happens that she's not ready for, she can react quickly. She's not prone to thinking about things too hard and is pretty single-minded, so it makes it easy to react quickly. Her physical reflexes are very good too.
Demanding Attention: If she really wants to get someone's attention she's pretty hard to ignore given how loud and how willing to ignore personal space she is. It makes her an excellent distraction.
Speed and Agility: Aphaerla is fast and flexible, and with her reflexes, this allows her to move in ways that would be difficult for other people. She has no trouble maneuvering through the thick underbrush of Twilight Jungle or going up stairs without touching the ground.
Swimming: She spends a lot of time at the pool and really enjoys swimming. It's like flying to her, much like some of the acrobatics she does, but this time you don't even have to touch the ground. She swims competitively, and this kind of training is the only other kind of training besides her spear training that she devotes a lot of time to.
Personality: Aphaerla is loud and noticeable. Even without her mutation, it'd be impossible to miss her in a room. She talks loud, she moves with a completely graceless power, and she's not afraid to push herself into the middle of anything that's there. Her emotions constantly lie at the extremes. She's never just happy, she's estatic. She's never just angry, she's furious. Further, her emotions can change at the drop of a hat, particularly if something she doesn't like happens. She has next to no control over them and will act out based on whatever she happens to be feeling at the time. Regardless of whether she's happy or sad, it tends to involve a lot of shouting. She's also really bad at hiding her emotions and can't keep her mouth shut.
She comes across as completely confident and fearless, but it'd be more accurate to say that she's just stupid and lacks social grace. Despite her boisterous personality, she's very insecure. Aphaerla needs constant validation that she's doing good things and good work and that she's an awesome person even though she constantly says these things about herself. The reason she has to keep saying them is because she doesn't completely believe it, and if she says it enough then maybe she'll start believing it. She's very eager to help people, even if her methods have all the subtlety and grace of a bull in a china shop. More than that, she's very eager to prove herself in order to get more praise and convince herself that she's worthy of the praise she gives herself.
Overall, she likes people and she really wants them to like her. However, she has no ability at all to read them or situations leading her to act inappropriately most of the time. This typically manifests in talking way too much, particularly in over dramatic, barely coherent monologues that make rambling make sense. She's prone to trying to project her emotions onto a situation through sheer force of will. If she's really happy everyone should be really happy. If she's really mad everyone should be really mad. Her words follow this pattern too with endless praise and celebration when she's happy and endless ranting and raving when she's angry. That said she tries, and typically fails, to keep a certain air of coolness about her because she always wants to look really cool and she wants everyone else to think she's really cool too.
Morally, she has no idea what to think anymore. At this point, she wants to avoid hurting people and tends to regret her more rash actions because of that. She's eager to help them with their problems, but that's more because she wants them to like her than anything else. Thus, a lot of what she thinks tends to revolve around how much it'll make other people like her or think she's really awesome. If other people have a positive opinion about something then it's good and if not then it should be avoided.
Magic Name: Bioluminescence
Magic: Aphaerla has bioluminecent paths going down her body. Those parts of her constantly glow with an intensity roughly equivalent to a florescent light. She's capable of making it glow brighter, but the brighter it gets the more difficult it is for her to hold that brightness. She's able to hold a brightness that can blind people for about a second. The same applies to dimming it, so she can completely turn it off for about a second. Other than that, the most it can do is light up dark places unless something is very weak to light. She can also control the color, but this serves no purpose other than looking cool.
History: From the moment she was born Aphaerla only heard of saving the world. It was all her parents ever talked about, and it was all they ever talk to her about. The world was in trouble and everyone had to work together to save it. It was easy to see from the windows of the city. Nothing but sand on one side and a twisted overgrown area on the other. She had no reason to doubt her parents and was more than happy to fight along side them even if there wasn't much she could do yet. She was told to give it time and everything would become so much easier as she grew up and Flourish would certainly welcome her with open arms.
A month before she started school, her parents took her to Twilight Jungle with them. It was the first time she was allowed to leave the apartment and was dizzied by just how big the world actually was. It was far greater than the single room she'd been living in, and there was so much more in it. Just seeing the giant trees made her feel small, but more than that, there were lots of people. The world was far more than just her and her parents, and she was starting to understand why they talked so much about saving it. All the colors were really pretty, and the way the city shone in the moonlight was something she'd always remember. She didn't understand what the adults were talking about. Parts of the city, bad people that needed to be dealt with, the wasteland and how to get there, it was too much for her five-year-old brain to comprehend but she listened anyway. After all, soon enough she'd be able to save the world too.
The trips became more frequent, and it didn't take long at all for her mutation to develop. Her parents said nothing about it, so she thought nothing of it. Based on the way the people in the jungle talked and looked it was perfectly normal anyway. Aphaerla was content to think that up until she started school.
It was unusual for a child her age to have the ability to use magic, and her mutation was very visible. Everywhere she went she got looks and saw people whispering. No one said anything to her, they just stared and looked scared. Aphaerla didn't understand it because to her this was perfectly normal. She assumed most of them had some kind of mutation too, she just couldn't see it. A lot of her parents' friends in the jungle were like that. After a few months it became abundantly clear to her that she wasn't normal. It made sense. Her parents words were starting to make more sense too. She was supposed to save the world. With this many people, if everyone could save the world it would already be saved right? There were more people than she could count. Whatever troubles the world was up against couldn't possibly stand up to that, so there had to be a reason they couldn't save the world, and a simple glance at her arms was all she needed to see the difference. Her parents never bothered to correct the way she viewed herself.
As she grew, life started to get more contradictory. Her mutation made socializing hard and she always felt awkward around people, but there were other people like that. Most of them didn't have mutations, but they were also staying away from people and finding it difficult to approach them. She talked to a lot of them, and after many awkward conversations she started to make friends. She learned about how the city worked and how it supported everyone and that everyone could help each other. She heard about terrible things happening at the industrial district, one of her friends even talking about how her mother never came home because of it.
Aphaerla knew why her friend's mother was never coming home as well. She heard about it about a week before the attack happened. But it was okay because that area was bad and the people that worked in it were bad and had to be dealt with. The world was in trouble and everyone needed to work together to save it, but those people were actively working towards its destruction. It was only fair that the world and those on its side fight back. But she couldn't forget the look on her classmates' faces when they first heard. She couldn't forget her friend's tears. At this point she didn't understand anything at all.
Aphaerla tried to figure it all out because everyone made a lot of sense. Decision making was never one of her strong points, and she didn't perform very well in school. That was fine because the world's greatest hero didn't know how to read all those big words, but now it was starting to hurt her. Thinking this hard just made her brain hurt and it seemed like the more she thought about it the more confused she got. She heard messages every day about the evils of Flourish, but her parents were her parents and they seemed to know so much about the world that no one else did. Rather than think about it more, she started to withdraw. She didn't want to talk to her friends or see her parents because they just made her feel like she wanted to throw up. More than anything, she wanted a sign.
Than it was her parents' turn to never come back home. They were part of an attack on a factory that ended up going bad and they ended up getting caught in the explosion. Aphaerla wasn't sure how to feel about it. She loved her parents, they loved her, but she didn't understand anything anymore. There was no doubt they believed in what they were doing and that they were more than willing to die for it, so it was probably okay that they did but...Even now she still couldn't think straight and sort out her feelings. She'd be turning 13 soon, so it was more reasonable for her to go out into the city on her own even when she didn't need to go to school. She tried once more to get the answers she wanted and sought out the Surveying Association.
There was no answer for what the monsters were, and there was no way of knowing. No one knew why magic did what it did. Flourish claimed to know all of that, but when she tried to get the answers out of them they couldn't answer. The Surveying Association didn't claim to know the answers and was trying to get them. Even Flourish avoided the monsters because they knew they'd be attacked if they didn't. The result of that attack from years ago and the look on her friend's face after it was still stuck in her mind, and gradually she started to understand what she needed to do. Aphaerla started to learn how to fight with the goal of destroying every monster inside Twilight Jungle.
The rest of her life quickly became difficult. The perpetrators of the attack were revealed and recognized by her peers. Aphaerla became associated with them despite her attempts to prove that she had nothing to do with any of it. She desperately tried to prove to everyone that she wasn't going to blow anyone up and that she was a completely reasonable person, but she quickly became frustrated. Even raising her voice was enough to make people flinch, sometimes seriously sometimes not. She became a target for harassment, given it was now incredibly obvious why she got her mutation. Going to school seemed pointless, so she rarely went and ignored the reprimanding she got. Learning how to fight was more important, and taking out the monsters in the jungle was even more important.
It didn't matter what any of them said. She was still going to save the world.
