Name: Tristan Carter
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Occupation: Surveyor, Mafia
Face Claim: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 - Alcor
Appearance: The word “slim” would be the easiest way to describe Tristan. Standing at 5’7” and weighing a whopping 120 lbs., his physique is reminiscent of a fragile twig. His features are much the same way: a skinny, straight nose; eyes that always look half-open at best; an angular chin; and flat cheeks.
Talents: Biology/Anatomy: Tristan has taken to studying these subjects recently. Though he doubts that his level of knowledge will ever be applicable in unexpected ways, he's hoping that he'd be able to discern the important parts of the creatures in the jungle. If not, he at least hopes that he'll be able to recognize pieces that would be of value to those studying the physiology of the monsters.
Business Economics: being raised with the goal of taking over a family business generally gives one a basic understanding of how businesses work and how to profit off of them. Especially if it's a mafia family.
General Studies: Tristan was always a quick learner with a mild interest in just about everything. He was also quick to store away and forget about any knowledge that wasn't immediately useful. As such, even if he may not remember it at the time, he's likely got at least one factoid about something at least related to everything somewhere in the storage space of his mind.
Personality: Despite the bad reputation it has, the mafia could be said to be about camaraderie, the value of family, and proving one's worth. However, even though these things could be said, anyone who knew anything about the mafia would assume that you were blackmailed, threatened, or simply insane. In much the same way, people who have openly complimented Tristan are few and far between.
It's not as though Tristan dislikes people, or is overly cruel, or anything of that nature. It's just that, when it comes to work, he has little tolerance for people who hinder his ability to do his job. Unfortunately for everyone, he's of the mind that, at this point, everyone has been trying to do what they can to be problematic. The people taking his orders seem incompetent at best. The people he works with only seem interested in taking the credit (not that he's overly surprised; he has no illusions about his line of work). The people he takes orders from have started to strike him as incredibly short-sighted and pompous. As such, his view of the family business - or at least, his place in the family business - has rapidly declined, and it shows in his willingness to deal with anyone related to work. It's also reflected in his treatment of those he is forced to work with, as he consistently belittles and threatens those who are “graced” with his presence. Unfortunately for himand everyone else, he has little opportunity to socialize outside of work.
The main exception to this would be his expeditions into the Twilight Jungle. Due to the dangerous nature of the jungle, he knows better than to venture out there on his own. Thankfully, magic is anything but an exclusive mafia trait, which means that he'd be able to work with any number of different people. As such, he does his best to try and keep a good rapport with most of his fellow surveyors. Even so, there are certain personality types that he simply can't stand - people who are driven solely by their own self interest or who are astoundingly overbearing, to give examples - as well as individuals that he'd be fine with if it weren't for certain actions taken. He judges individuals based on their actions, though, so he won't dislike someone simply on the basis of their job or anything; he would just take extra care to avoid the topic of family.
No matter the circumstances, though, one thing about him remains constant: he does his best to avoid unwanted attention. Being a memorable mafia member makes you a target for the police, and standing out makes you obvious prey in the jungle. That's why he's content to let others take point and act like the leader. It's also one of the reasons why he refuses to take on any of the more grisly aspects of the family business, as well as a simple unwillingness to take a person's life.
Magic Name: Black Magic
Magic: Tristan is capable of casting “spells” consisting of four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. Despite the variety of elements, the only application of the elements that he has been able to find is of an offense-inclined nature, and their usefulness is varied. After all, the fireball, though only slightly larger than Tristan's fist, is inherently more destructive than two gallons of water being flung at an enemy. The same could be said of a twenty pound rock when compared to winds that could knock somebody over depending on how lucky they are that day. Of course, it takes energy to make the elements manifest, as well as being a lengthy process. Switching between the elements only extends this process, as it takes time for the body to safely dispel what's already been created.
Tristan's mutation occurred within the palms of his hands. He refers to it as the “catalyst” simply because it's what's allows him to utilize magic, but it doesn't help that he knows very little about it. What he does know for sure is this: as he used and strengthened his magic over time, he gradually lost his sense of touch in his hands; also, back around when he first used magic, he noticed a small, foreign lump when he pressed on the muscles around his thumb on each hand. As the years went by, the lump grew to where it was visible, likely in correlation to the use of his magic.
As for the magic itself, it's effects are relatively straightforward: Tristan conjures up the prepared element, and he sends it in whatever direction he wants in much the same way that he would a baseball. As for the byproducts of his magic, the only things inherently magical about them is their source and the fact that they seem to try and maintain their shape. Once created, the water is no different than what would be found in New Sumatra’s water supply, and it's a similar trait shared by all four elements. Like any normal projectile, Tristan has no control over the element in question once it's been released from his grasp.
Fire: the fireball that he creates is slightly smaller than his fist, roughly 220°F, and is normal fire. Like all fire, it has a chance to ignite combustible fuel sources. If it does, then the temperature and size of the flame are dependant on the fuel. If the fire doesn't catch, though, then all the opponent is likely to suffer is a few burns of varying severity. If it's prepared, his touch leaves behind as and embers.
Water: Tristan creates two gallons of water at 70°F. Unless his opponent is very weak to water, or he gets absurdly lucky and somehow manages to get the opponent to drown from water thrown in their face, the offensive capabilities of this element are rather lacking. If prepared, Tristan's touch leaves behind droplets of condensation.
Earth: he launches a 20 lb. chunk of granite. He's not particularly great at throwing things that weigh that amount, so its usefulness is limited. However, it becomes increasingly more useful the higher he stands above his opponent. Given extremely favorable conditions, it could be fatal. Given less favorable conditions, it's usefulness could vary between inflicting injury, stunning the opponent, or being horribly ineffective. If prepared, his touch leaves behind a fine, chalky powder.
Air: Tristan conjures up a gust of wind at 15mph. On its own, it's offensive capabilities are negligible. However, with some creativity and a bit of luck, it can be combined with a hazardous environment for wonderful results. Otherwise, though, it's mainly capable of knocking over or stunning enemies. If prepared, his touch leaves behind air. Or nothing, if one would prefer to see it that way.
History: Tristan couldn't remember his birth parents if he tried. For one reason or another, he had been put up for adoption at birth. Luckily for him, a childless man was in search of an heir, and so Tristan was adopted by Francisco Alighieri, a moderately high ranking member of the New Sumatran Mafia. Alighieri decided that Tristan would keep his last name, though, so that he would “always have a reminder that, for better or worse, luck will play a large part of your life.” And yet, despite the difference of names, Tristan was his son, and thus raised to one day take over his place in the family business.
Tristan learned at a young age that his father was right. At six, he contracted a life threatening disease but made a miraculous recovery. At eight, an older cousin of his threw him down a flight of stairs, but he limped away with only a sprained ankle. Later that month, he tripped on his own foot and ended up with a broken arm. At twelve, without rhyme, reason, or ever going near the Twilight Jungle, Tristan mutated and developed magic.
Thanks to it being internal, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly when the mutation occurred. Some of the so-called experts claim that the mutation likely finished taking place shortly before Tristan conjured that first flame. Others say that it's possible to have been there from birth or to have developed at any time afterwards, and that it had simply been the first time that his subconscious had activated it. Either way, what's known for certain is this: Tristan, bored one day, sat and watched a candle burn down. Only a few minutes later, he found himself experiencing a strange sense of warmth in his palm that didn't seem to have any point of origin that he could place until he lifted it up. Dancing in the palm of his hand was a little flame, just like the one in the candle.
Before, the family had welcomed him as a member although there were those who had misgivings and saw him as an outsider. However, they respected that, for better or worse, he was one of them. After he displayed his powers, nothing obvious changed. However, he was able to pick up on a slight shift in almost everyone's mood towards him. They no longer saw him as Tristan, heir to the Alighieri branch. He was now Tristan, future Surveyor. The only one who didn't see him as such was Alighieri himself. He was adamant that Tristan wouldn't be forced or manipulated into that. And, so, Tristan carried on as always, only now trying to learn how to control his magic.
As the years went on, though, as he became more and more involved, Tristan learned just how profitable and useful a Surveyor would be to the family. Having first pick at the resources brought back would be an undeniable asset, and Tristan was confident that he could bring in these resources and survive long enough to still take charge after his father resigns. And so, when he turned nineteen, he informed his father of his intentions. He would go into the Twilight Jungle, bring back resources that could bring untold benefits to the family, and keep himself in one piece while doing so. If sheer force of will wouldn't ensure his survival, then he was willing to bet that his luck could give him an edge.
Reluctantly, Alighieri agreed, and Tristan has been a Surveyor in the months since.
