Matt stood at the city gates, looking out at the breathtaking view surrounding him. Whoever it was that decided to respond to his signup sheet was going to show up at any minute, but for now Matt simply wanted to take time to himself in the secluded meeting spot he'd picked.
Well, it wasn't really a secluded spot since people could see him, but he was far away enough that people wouldn't be able to see his mini freakout. He was doing this... he was really freakin' doing this! He didn't know whether he felt more excited or scared: should he be terrified of the desert's unrelenting heat, terrain and death-inducing phenomenon or should he be seriously pumped up about how he's finally getting to discover more of the world that apparently once was? Matt knew that humans often twisted history to suit their own needs, but he still wanted to believe that there really were whole civilisations that had existed at one point. His quickened breath, thumping heart and sweaty palms were proof of his determination...and fear.
"I want everyone to hurry up and come already, but at the same time, I'm glad I got some more down time... I need to check again that I've got everything - revitalising sports drinks? Check. Goofy-looking but effective as hell sunhat? Check. Whistle in case I need help? Check. Spare phone battery? Check. Nutritious food? Check. First-aid kit...first-aid kit?! It's gone?! It's gone! It's...oh." A red cross at his feet revealed that he'd dropped it in his overzealous recheck of everything. Oops.
'Nice going, dumbass.' Was what sprung to mind, but he shook his head quickly. He couldn't doubt himself now - it wasn't the time nor place for it. The buggy from the surveying committee (which he had been given a crash course on driving) was parked nearby, supplies were ready, his parents had been succesfully lied to... yup! He was ready; all that was left now was to wait and see who he'd be entrusting his life to.

Expedition of day 60 New Sumatra lies on a flat area in the middle of the wasteland. The area is firm, but covered in a thick layer of sand. The only signs of life are directly around the city, where there are several mines and large fields of solar panels. Beyond that, there's no plants, no animals, and not even any movement. No wind blows, no water flows, there aren't even any insects. The entire area is completely silent, save for the sound of the explorer's footsteps. At the edge of the plateau the city is on, the land gently slopes downward. The angle is gentle, there are stairs in the city steeper than the slope. It has a few small rocks on it, but is otherwise just a pile of sand. The sand is thicker on the slope than it is on the plateau, making it more difficult to walk on. In the distance, other plateaus like the one the city is on can be seen, and the plateaus come in various sizes. But there's no signs of life on any of them, and it looks like they only have more sand to offer. There's nothing notable about this place so far. There's only the hope that something better is out there, and that maybe there's a clue about how the wasteland came to be hidden under the sand. --- The party has 100 energy No one is injured You can go to the left, further into the wasteland. You can go to the right, further into the wasteland.

Matt waited, and waited, and waited... nope. No one was coming. It was surprising, sure, but Matt wasn't too shocked. After all, people had explored the area around the wasteland pretty thoroughly already, but Matt felt somehow like something would be different on his expedition. He was sure that he'd find at least something out here, whether it be a cool-looking rock or perhaps even an ancient relic! His spirit for adventure wasn’t going to be quenched by a minor setback like going alone -- besides, he had plenty of supplies which he was sure would last at least a week, considering how much he’d brought. Now that he was alone, he was wondering if he’d brought too much…
In any case, Matt wasn’t going to wait any longer! Exploration was calling his name loud and clear, and he planned to answer its call without hesitation. He had an awesome playlist saved onto his phone (he was prepared just in case there was no signal to be had wherever he ended up) and he knew how to take care of himself. Deciding that whatever direction the sun wasn’t blaring in was fine to proceed in, he hopped into his buggy and drove off, suppressing his fear with the music playing from his earphones.

The land around the city is sturdy, but soft. Once the land starts to gently slope downwards the sand becomes thicker, making the explorers sink into it more than they had prior. Some spots had the occasional bit of harder rock, or even a rocky cliff face, but it was uncommon.
The rocky areas are a bit easier to move on, even if they're a bit more uneven. Unfortunately, it turns out some of the rocks are a bit loose and move under pressure. Pushing them moves them into a more stable place, but it means going is slower than expected until the ground stabilizes a bit.

It was funny - Matt didn't think he'd be struggling not to get stuck this early in his adventure. The city gates were barely out of view and yet he already found himself having a hard time with this stupidly thick sand. Then again, what was he expecting? A rock-hard wasteland like those he had seen in the movies? No, this was more like a bottomless desert! No, maybe it wasn't even that - surely deserts still had canyons and floors, but this stuff was more like quicksand than actual sand. More often than not, he found himself having to get out of the buggy and push it out of the soft spots. This was going to take some careful maneuvering... Eventually he managed to pass, but he'd drunk a whole bottle of coconut water and the buggy's fuel wasn't going to last forever... it would be okay, though! He had to believe everything would be okay. Deciding to go just a bit further until he found at least something of interest, Matt started up the buggy and put his earphones back into his ears, hoping the music would lift his slightly dampened mood.

Move: Left, further into the wasteland.

The land continues to be featureless, sand an rock as far as the eye can see. Dealing with the sun is already difficult, but moving straight into it makes it near impossible to see. It's bright, and with no cloud cover it's outright blinding. It makes the large chasm cutting through the wasteland near impossible to see. If the explorers aren't careful, it's easy to get separated by such a large split in the land.

All these trials were beginning to get to Matt... it didn't help that his playlist was shifting to the hardcore rock section, either. He decided to take out his earphones and appreciate the quiet for once. He continued onwards in the hopes he'd eventually find more.

The land continues to be featureless, sand an rock as far as the eye can see. The sand is still easy to sink into, and it can be difficult to notice when it's normal sinking or when the explorers are actually falling. The sand is covering a lot of large holes over the area, held together by rocks so it doesn't fall into the hole itself. If the explorers were to step on them, they'd find themselves falling a very long distance into a cave. --- Injury terrain feature was not bypassed. Matt sighed. This was actually really boring... exploring the wastelands was no fun on your own! Matt hadn't found a single interesting thing since setting out, and he was seriously beginning to feel the heat.
That's when it happened.
All of a sudden, the sand fell away and Matt found himself slamming on the brakes of the buggy, screaming in horror; the wheels thankfully came to a stop, but the wretched sand shifted forwards yet for a damnable moment - was this it? Was he going to die here? Was this buggy going to fall, and him along with it?! He closed his eyes tight, muttering a thousand prayers to a thousand gods in the hopes that maybe just one would heed his call and send him a miracle--!
A second passed. Then another.
He...wasn't falling. That was good. A tentative eye opened slowly, daring to look at the pit opening before him. A heavy sigh of relief escaped his lips. His heart was still beating like it wanted to fly from his chest, but he knew he was safe for now...at least, sort of. He wasn't out of the woods yet -- he still needed to get the buggy back to where he could safely drive back. Unbuckling his seatbelt, he climbed to the back of the buggy and pulled a rope out from his pack. Tying it around the metal framework, he pulled with all his might until he finally heard the satisfying grind of wheel on sand. He'd actually managed to pull it off... Gulping down another of his precious bottles of sports drink, Matt decided that this would be more than enough adventuring for one day. Maybe even enough for a week, or a month... If Matt wanted to return to the wastelands, he'd have to make sure to bring someone along rather than leaving it to chance and a sign-up sheet...
With a sigh, Matt began the arduous journey back to the city... he'd be keeping all of this to himself where possible. This sure was an embarrassingly pointless expedition.

All earned loot will go straight to Matt's GLORY if possible, please!
