It was easy to get focused. Once she started fighting those training dummies it was like she became one with her spear and got lost in a trance. She could sit there and stab them for hours and it would only feel like seconds. It was the same with a lot of things she did; once she got started if she was at all interested in what she was doing she was completely absorbed in it. This often lead her to do things like forget to eat and sleep. Thus, when she slept she slept for a really long time. It wasn't even that unusual for her to fall asleep in the training hall because she suddenly collapsed after being up for nearly two days straight. When she ate, she ate huge meals and didn't pay much attention to the nutritional aspects of it. No one had time for that, and she was really active so it's not like she'd get fat, and as long as she wasn't hungry her body was probably getting everything it needed. It made sense to her anyway.
Aphaerla didn't notice she needed to eat something until her blows started becoming weak and she was occasionally stumbling because she was seeing black spots. As much as she wanted to fight through it, it was really hard to do so. Grumbling, she left her spear behind because, for some reason, the city didn't like it when she carried sharp weapons with her. It never made any sense to her, it's not like she was going to stab anyone with it. The spear was reserved for monsters only! Right now, like almost always, she didn't care what she ate. She just wanted to eat something as quickly as possible and get back to doing important stuff like practicing victory poses. Thus, she picked the place she could get the food the fastest because it's not like health or taste mattered that much.
She got three burgers, two extra large orders of fries and a huge soda. There was a small eating area that she took advantage of and started shoveling food into her mouth at an astounding rate. Half the time she didn't even bother to chew, favoring taking a big swig of her drink every time something got stuck in her throat. Despite the size of the meal, it only took a few minutes for her to go through it all, ball up the wrapping, and throw it away. The trash can was just out of arm's reach, but close enough that it'd be an easy enough shot to just toss all her trash into it. The remains of her drink and fries made it, but the burger wrapper hit the edge and bounced off onto the ground. Aphaerla didn't bother to check though. It was an easy shot and her aim was perfect, there was no doubt she made it. Therefore, it was perfectly safe to head back to the training hall and do some spear spinning.

Etude rarely ate at WacDonnalds. The bread tasted like a candy bar and the grease was thick enough that the few times she’d eaten from here, it felt like she could never get it off her hands no matter how many times she washed them. It was the kind of meal that stuck with you for the next two to three days, so she preferred to stick to her apples and bananas.
Even so, she came by the place at least twice a week. Her patrols brought her around here fairly often, and it was a common place for people to ask directions to (and get lost trying to find). She’d developed an odd kind of admiration for the place; it made many people very happy for very cheap, and got others food quickly so they could get back to work. It spread happiness and saved time, and there was something to be said about that.
Today, as usual, she was just passing by. The handful of people at the eating area where happy, the passersby were content, and all was peaceful and well. Until, that was, movement caught her eye. One of the occupants had thrown a wad of trash at the trashcan and sorrowfully missed part of the throw. She had expected the girl to right the mistake, or at least make a second attempt at the shot, but instead she appeared to be going on her way as though she hadn’t seen a thing.
And that was littering.
“Ma’am!” She called after the girl, picking up at a jog to try to cut her off. “Please wait a moment. You’ve left your trash on the ground,” she pointed to the wrapper, “which is a small offense and a seemingly insignificant action, however large amounts of money and the time of thoughtful volunteers are spent cleaning up the collective trash left behind by the denizens of the city. If everyone failed to properly throw away their trash, there’d be nine hundred million pieces of litter littering our beautiful streets. If everyone picked up after themselves, we could instead spend that volunteer time planting flowers or painting murals. But you can help make the city a better place!” She pointed dramatically upwards, giving the girl a heroic smile. “Just a moment of your time can change the face of the city! So, can you come back and pick up your litter?”

It took her a moment to respond to the person trying to get her attention, as her mind was far too focused on interesting ways to twirl her spear after a fight. Her eyes were firmly focused on the ground, and she was moving with such speed that by the time she turned around the WacDonalds was nearly out of sight. Aphaerla had to skid to a stop because of the speed she was moving at. Her shoes had good traction, so it was easy, but the soles were rubber, so they made a high pitched squeaking sound as the friction between them in the smooth tile floor grew. It got her a few looks, but given she was already glowing all the time.
"Huh?"
All she could think when she saw the person was how her glowing was way cooler than this person's glowing. To prove it, she started having her lights slowly change colors between every color she could think of. Definitely better than just being a little sparkly.
Wait, the person was saying something. She couldn't get distracted by someone being a little sparkly when they are talking. That would be bad, and would probably make her look stupid when she had no idea what the person said. Aphaerla blinked a few times once the words registered. What was she even going on about? She stuck a finger in one of her ears just to make sure she had washed them properly last time she showered and wasn't mishearing things, but no she wasn't. This person was talking like she missed her shot, but that was completely impossible and somewhat insulting to even imply. Her nostrils flared and she blew a quick puff of air out of her nose before turning back around.
"You must be mistaken. It's someone else's, there's no way it could be mine."
Aphaerla didn't even bother to wait for her to finish her speech before making her way back to the training hall. There was no point after all. She was talking to the wrong person, so all letting her babble on would do is waste both of their time.

Even as she started walking away, Etude followed, not once faltering in her statement. This was a very important message and it was very important that the litterer heard. But despite her best efforts, it seemed she had failed.
Surely the young woman had heard her wrong. She could understand if she was accusing the student of something like theft she might play innocent, but this was just littering. Littering was something that it seemed everyone could agree was bad, and picking up after oneself was something that everyone could agree was good. It’d only take thirty seconds, absolute tops, for her to pick up the trash and throw it away, and everyone would be happy and the city would be cleaner. Yes, certainly some kind of misunderstanding had happened here.
“No, I saw you throw it. I’m certain it’s yours.” She clarified.
She picked up her pace to a light jog in hopes of catching up before she got too far away. It wouldn’t surprise her if reach was the reason she’d misinterpreted what she was saying, so closing that was necessary. Plus, the longer the distance, the more inconvenient walk back would be. That would just waste this citizen’s time and go completely against the point of WacDonnalds.
The good news was she was fairly easy to keep track of. It’d registered for Etude when the woman’d started changing colors sometime after she’d addressed her; she was glowing. It was of some surprise to her that she didn’t notice the obvious mutation immediately. This was probably the point where a lot of officers looked the other way or just went and got the trash themselves, but Etude’d never understood that sentiment. An admittedly nice looking light show didn’t give one a free pass to throw their garbage wherever they wanted. Etude owed it to whatever janitor or thoughtful person would have otherwise had to pick up the trash to make sure this didn’t become a repeat - or worse, common - occurrence.
“Miss, please stop and and pick up your waste.” She said a little louder, making sure to enunciate. “It isn’t a crime until you walk away!”

At first, Aphaerla kept walking, assuming the issue was resolved or that she misunderstood and this weird lady wasn't actually talking to her. It wasn't until a few shouts later and the weird lady catching up to her and moving in front of her, that she realized that nothing had been cleared up and there were no misunderstandings there. She stopped again, her expression flattened, her cheeks puffed out, and her hands balled into fists.
There were few things Aphaerla was truly good at. She struggled through basic things, like reading. She wasn't very good around people, had trouble understanding them, and none of them seemed to understand her. She wasn't even very creative. The one thing she had going was her physical prowess. Her agility and accuracy was highly trained, it needed to be for her to survive in Twilight Jungle. She had trained it so well that she was able to throw her spear through the eye (or whatever equivalent) of most of the monsters in the jungle. Aphearla was good, she knew she was good, and she knew it was one of the few things she could do. Suggesting that she somehow failed at one of the few things she could do was insulting.
"I already told you. That's. Not. Possible. Stop blaming me for other peoples' problems."

There was no doubt to if the woman had heard her correctly now or not. This was certainly an unusual tactic, saying it was an impossibility for her to have done the deed of littering. She clearly had magic of some kind or another; maybe if her ability was to never miss a shot, like anything she threw was helpfully guided by a generated gust of wind to a point of her wanting, Etude could believe that it was impossible for that litter to be hers. Maybe it had been some optical illusion unfortunately caused by the woman’s light and the reflective surface of the trash can, and she really was the one in wrong. But her eyes would not normally be so thoroughly tricked by something as simple as some extra colors, and seeing as she had missed a shot, it was clear the woman was in fact the one who was wrong.
It was one thing to commit a crime. It was a whole other to not own up to it. Etude couldn’t let her walk away with the attitude that she had done nothing wrong and so had full rights to do it again; she was young, and that could easily lead to worse offenses. What if she tried the same thing after hurting someone? With magic and the potential of great good or harm that gave her, she had to be especially careful. At the very least, she couldn’t set a precedent that this tactic of declaring innocents would work with authorities.
Squaring her shoulders and using her full height to seem authoritative, Etude took a more serious expression to match and a step towards the student. “Don’t pass the blame for your actions onto others. Take ownership, fix it, and move on.”

Aphaerla wasn't even slightly intimidated by the officer's stance. She dealt with things far scarier than her on a regular basis. Her eyes narrowed and her cheeks puffed out. She balled her hands into fists, and kept her head high. Her gaze didn't waver for a moment, focusing straight into the officer's eyes, and her frown didn't let up either.
"That's exactly what I told you!" she shouted, getting several looks because of it. "Stop bothering people that have nothing to do with whatever and go do whatever it is you're doing!"
She moved like she was going to push the officer out of the way, but caught herself before her arm moved too far. Aphaerla thought she was completely with in her rights to do something as minor as push someone given how she was being treated, but no one ever seemed to think of the same way. She mentally cursed how much she looked like her mother as she remembered how everyone at school acted when she did something as minor as raise her voice. Aphaerla paused for a moment before forcing her arms down to her side and stomping around the officer instead of trying to go right through her.

This was turning into a tense staring contest, and one Etude was not going to back out of. Given the woman’s steadfastness, it was also one she thought was not going to end as quickly as it did. Did she think she had lost the argument or something and so was running off? Or maybe she thought she had won it and so was running off. Either way, Etude couldn’t let her leave. Not with this much unfinished business.
She returned the woman’s not quite push with a grab of her own, attempting to put a hand on her shoulder. Not overly hard or anything, just firm enough to keep her from storming off from the scene of the crime. She put her other hand staunchly on her hip and said in her important officer voice, “Now ma’am, if you leave, I’m still going to have to ticket you for littering. You could continue to insist the police officer with security footage backing her is wrong, but I don’t think you want a fine and I really don’t want to fill out the forum to request security footage. It’s like fifteen pages.”
She lowered her head and lowered her voice in kind, taking on a bit of a sly edge, an untold request for her to keep what was said here to herself. “Or, there’s another option. You pick up the trash, I don’t give you a ticket, and later we can settle who was right once and for all. Twilight Jungle, the two-story rock with three holes blown in it, tomorrow at midnight. If you beat me, well, I will owe you quite the apology.”
If she was certain she was right, and Etude was certain she was right, there was really only one way to settle this, wasn't there? Bureaucracy wouldn’t approve, but bureaucracy wanted fifteen pages of signatures and redundant information to accomplish what could otherwise be done with a friendly hello, five minutes of small talk, and a friendly request to a fellow with a computer a department down. All to, again, fill out another forum. It wasn’t her fault they hadn’t yet figured out the efficiency of her proposed method, and she wasn’t going to fill out the phone book of paperwork it was going to take them to realize it. She’d probably die before that was finished. Bureaucracy just wouldn't be told.

Aphaerla visibly recoiled when she was touched. Not because it hurt or anything, just because she was getting really irritated really quickly. At this point, she just wanted to either make everyone go away or disappear; anything so she could just get back to what she was doing and not be bothered by all this nonsense. It made her power flare up subconsciously. The lights on her body grew brighter. Bright enough that looking directly at her might be a little painful, but not so much that anyone would be blinded. She managed to catch herself and dim it back down to normal levels after a few seconds, but the whole thing left her even more frustrated than she already was.
As much as taking that frustration out on a bunch of monsters sounded nice, it also meant that she had to admit to wrongdoing she had nothing to do with. That was never going to happen. Aphaerla already had to deal with people saying stuff behind her back, or associating her with people she was nothing like, she wasn't about to stoop so low as to cover for someone else.
"Or," she turned, trying to slap the officer's hand off her shoulder. "You could leave me alone and go find whoever did whatever you're complaining about." Aphaerla turned back forward to continue storming back to the Surveying Association's building. "Besides, I'd obviously win. It wouldn't even be much of a contest."
Aphaerla doubted anyone could measure up to her abilities. She started training when she was around 5, and even if she preferred not to think about what her parents were preparing her for, no one could deny the effectiveness. She had all the benefits of training for a really long time without being old like the people with the equivalent amount of experience would be. There was no way she could lose a contest like this.

The knocking of her hand wasn’t much of a surprise, but it was something she didn’t have much for guards against. The refusal of a direct challenge was what got Etude. The surveyor looked tough and sure of herself, and even had magic, so Etude had thought she was the sort who already knew that was the best way to solve issues and was willing to do so, no discussion besides a place and time needed. She could try to counter it, though.
There was one tactic she had that sometimes got otherwise reluctant people to take up her challenges. Mostly because it was exactly what got her riled up and ready to fight, so she’d begun using it on others too. Occasionally it backfired horribly, but occasionally it worked really well and she was going to be banking on that.
Though the bulk of the student’s lights had died down, she was still squinting to try to rid her eyes of the troublesome white dots. She stepped up and tried to put another hand on the student’s shoulder. The grab itself wasn’t rough, and she’d take another step forward to make sure she didn’t jerk the student, but her grip was tight and this time with some staying power. However this all played out, if she wasn’t going to pick it up, she kinda did need to write her up a ticket for littering. Letting things slide set bad presidents. She made a single, overly mocking laugh, not unlike a villain would in a cartoon, before lowering her voice once again. “It’s obvious, huh? This world doesn’t run on what would ‘obviously’ happen, it runs on what actually happens.” She was leaning forward and down, and smirking wide. “You think you’d win? Prove it.”
