There was something ahead. What, she hadn’t any idea besides it was big, loud, and may or may not be responsible for the claw marks on the way there. It had to be dangerous - those claw marks could take a person’s head off should they be in the wrong place at the wrong time - which meant they had to defeat it before it could take any extraneous limbs.
The grin was cemented on Etude’s face as she ran, blade drawn from from over her shoulder, down the hallway that would lead them to battle with the beast. It didn’t matter who was leading or any of that - there was bound to be plenty to go around. And with four, she was certain they could take it on, whatever it was.

As the explorers move to the next room, the sound of heavy footsteps gets louder. With each thud from those steps, loose rocks and other debris move away from the source of the footsteps and towards the explorers. It starts out as smaller movements, as though the floor and walls are shaking, but as they get closer the debris starts flying. The debris is easily being lifted up off the ground and being flung around the room, always away from the source of the footsteps. The wails get louder as the explorers approach. Then the explorers can see the figure that caused those gashes in the wall and it quickly becomes clear that it is not responsible for the wails. The room leads into an even larger room, also bright and decorated with murals. Much like before, the murals depict a large rainforest, floating islands, and people with wings. It doesn't look like the colors on the walls have faded with time either. If they have, then the dyes used must have been especially bright given how vivid the colors on the murals are. The floor is covered with bright tiles; the ceiling is the only bit of gray in the room. At the end of the room is a massive creature. It resembles a large dog, though it's far larger than any dog ever seen in New Sumatra. Even on all fours it's nearly 12 feet tall, making it large enough that it couldn't even fit through most of the corridors in the ruins. Its fur moves, as though it's floating through the air. It waves when the beast is standing still, and has fluid, almost airy, motions when it moves. On each of its paws are three claws, each nearly double the size of a human head. As the explorers approach, those claws are digging into the half a dozen monsters surrounding the beast. As the beast digs into one of the monsters, it lets out a high pitched wail. The wail is enough to make the explorers' bones shake in their bodies, but the beast does not seem particularly bothered by it. It barks then easily rips the monster apart. The monster disappears leaving an even louder wail behind, as though it dissolved into the sound on its death. The beast catches another monster in its massive jaws and bites down hard. The monster explodes into a fireball, but the beast shrugs it off, the fire falling away from its face. It doesn't even look singed after. The beast quickly chews through the rest of the monsters with enough speed that if the explorers blink they might miss it. With all of them out of the way, it turns its attention to the explorers. It leans forward and lets out a deep growl, likely as a warning. The beast hangs back at first, glaring at the explorers. It doesn't move, but the loose debris in the room goes flying anyway. It's as though something pushed everything, hard. The explorers can feel it to. Even if they don't move, they can feel something trying to knock them back with far greater force than most humans could exert, but if they get closer the force is even greater. It's very difficult to resist, especially with all the debris flying. --- Exhaustion boss attack was successfully bypassed. The sounds were getting closer, and the closer they got the wider Aphaerla's grin got. Her pace picked up with little regard to the people behind her. There was a big monster here! Maybe it was an important monster in the monster civilization and defeating it would make all its subordinates scatter? Or maybe they'd realize how out classed they were and they'd finally run away and find someone else to bother? That's what it meant to go after the strongest one right? The possibilities swarmed her mind until she finally saw the creature and came to a sudden stop.
More than anything, she was really let down by finally seeing it. It wasn't some freaky thing with killer hair or more heads than she could count or even made out of some weird squishy thing, it was just a dog. Did it even count as a monster, even if it was really big? The other monsters didn't seem to think so given they were fighting, unless there was some severe disagreement going on here. Aphaerla frowned, but she still wasn't about to let a big, powerful monster live. It was her job to save the world and she couldn't back down from anything, even if it was a bit unexpected. So, she charged without fear, spear at the ready hoping that its body worked like a normal dog's.
Her body felt light, fast, strong, like she could take on the world and there was nothing that could stop her. It was a great feeling, and it fueled her charge, making it that much stronger than it would otherwise be. Her lights shone brighter than they normally did, though still not bright enough to be blinding, and she started to rapidly change their colors because of the fight. It was important to go all out in times like this, and looking cool was an important piece of that.
Aphaerla noticed the debris moving around, but didn't think much of it until an invisible force started pushing her back. It was enough to make her stumble, but a few hops and a little bit of arm flailing was enough to let her keep her balance. The waves kept coming though, and it was difficult to fight against them. She kept getting pushed back until she was far enough away to get some firm footing on the ground again.
Unfortunately for the monster, she was invincible today. He picked the wrong day to be near her.
She charged again, with more speed and vigor than before. Aphaerla put one of her arms out, like she was trying to plow through a crowd and did everything she could to keep her momentum. It was enough, as difficult as it was to get close, and she was able to thrust her spear into the beast's side. It wasn't a very deep stab because of the distance she had to hit him, but it was enough to make it bleed. More importantly, she had a new foot hold to get closer despite the magic that was trying to push her away. She firmly put both hands on her spear, and started pulling herself closer as though she were climbing a rope. Gradually, she got closer and closer. It was slow, but eventually she'd be able to get a good hit in.
Unfortunately, the dog had other ideas. It howled, and a more powerful shockwave than before emanated from it. The force was enough to dislodge her spear from its ribs and it sent Aphaerla flying across the room, spear in hand. She went flying so far, that she went back into the previous room and was slammed against the wall. Her body slid down the wall, much like a bug on a windshield, and she stopped moving. She was still breathing, but it didn't look like she was going to be getting up any time soon.

This was the worst-case scenario. The team was up against a powerful monster, and the monster's ability was one that Iris's magic was apparently useless against. The force pushing from the monster didn't seem to originate in anything physical for Iris to slow down, and while she could make those pushed by it get pushed more slowly, that didn't stop people from being pushed away in the first place.
Maybe she could have figured something out given enough time, but she was already tired by this point. Aphaerla must have been tired too, her bravado notwithstanding, considering how quickly she was overwhelmed after her reckless attack. Iris managed to slow the flying Aphaerla in the last moment before she struck the wall, but it was still a hard impact.
Iris rushed over to Aphaerla's side, grabbing her by the shoulders and doing her best to drag her fellow explorer away from the monster. She had to shout to be heard over the big monster's growling.
"It's not following us, right!? I really think we should fall back and think up a plan!"
